Things to know
There is no train service directly to Ha Giang. There is also no airport nearby. As such, the only ways to arrive in Ha Giang is via land transport such as a bus/minivan, private car, or motorbike. Driving by motorbike is only recommended if you are an experienced and licensed motorbike driver, as the terrain can be quite rugged.

Traveling from Hanoi to Ha Giang

Travel Time: 6-8 hours

The most comfortable and reasonable way of traveling from Hanoi to Ha Giang is via VIP sleeper bus or limousine van. Sapa is a famous destination also in the far north of Vietnam, west of Ha Giang. As such, if you’re already planning a trip to Sapa it makes more sense to go from Sapa to Ha Giang instead of traveling back to Hanoi.

Traveling from Ninh Binh to Ha Giang
Distance: 380km
Travel Time: 10-12 hours
Recommended Method of Transportation: Bus
Start: 19H00 every day from Banana Tree Hostel.
Ninh Binh, often referred to as Halong Bay on land, is rife with stunning limestone karsts and rivers where you can hire boats to float you along the gorgeous scenery. If you’re lucky, you may even end up with a local lady who can paddle you down the river with her feet!
There are tourist sleeper buses from Ninh Binh to Ha Giang. Alternatively, you may opt to return to Hanoi before heading to Ha Giang, since it’s on the way.

Traveling from Cat Ba to Ha Giang

Recommended Method of Transportation: Ferry > Bus to Hanoi > Bus to Ha Giang
Cat Ba is an island around world-renowned Ha Long Bay. As you may well guess, in order to travel from Cat Ba to Ha Giang you must first take a ferry back to the mainland Hai Phong port. The most straightforward way to travel from Cat Ba to Ha Giang is to take a ferry to Hai Phong port, then a bus back to Hanoi. From there, book a sleeper bus or VIP van to Ha Giang.
